Why this kit is built this way
System objective: a record of everyone who comes through the door of a short-stay apartment, with no camera inside the unit.
Why the door. The deaths the Nation has reported in Nairobi short-stay apartments, in Kilimani, Lavington, South B, Roysambu and Utawala, often involved a second person coming into the unit with little scrutiny. In the Lavington case the suspect was captured on CCTV. The Ministry of Tourism guidelines ask hosts to identify guests and encourage CCTV, and Nairobi County has proposed CCTV that captures those entering short-stay premises. Airbnb has banned indoor cameras since April 2024, so the camera belongs outside the unit.

Why a fixed camera
A fixed lens covers the unit door and nothing else, so it cannot be turned towards a neighbour's door the way a pan and tilt camera can.
Before it goes up
- Written consent from the building manager or management company, since the corridor is a common area
- A 12V supply at the mounting point, usually run from inside the unit; the camera has no PoE
- Wi-Fi from the unit that reaches the corridor
- Disclosure on your listing, and a sign saying who records, why and for how long, as the Data Protection Commissioner's draft guidance expects
This kit records who comes and goes. It does not vet guests or replace checking ID at check-in, and it does not include a smart lock.
